Introduction to Surat, India
The population of Surat, India nearly doubled between 2001 and 2010, making this city, also known as Suryapur, the 36th largest in the world. Although this rapid growth shows no signs of slowing down, Surat remains one of India's cleanest and safest cities. One of the most renowned Surat hotels has been designated the first five-star pure vegetarian hotel in the world and contains India's biggest convention centre. The graves of the English traders who first settled in the city in 1608 and their Dutch counterparts who soon followed in 1617 can still be visited in the old English and Dutch cemeteries. The city's Armenian traders also have their own large cemetery. Municipal offices now occupy the local fort, originally established by the English in 1616, while the ancient Mugal Sarai building is currently an office complex. The Jain temple of Chintamani offers rare paintings and intricate wooden carvings that have remained unchanged since the temple was first erected in the 15th century. A musical fountain accompanies the food stalls at the relaxing Jawaharlal Nehru Garden, which the locals call Chowpaty.
