Introduction to Shirdi, India
The small municipality of Shirdi, India is situated about 296kms from Mumbai and is known as the Land of Sai because its best known resident is a revered guru named Shirdi Sai Baba. Baba's followers form a large percentage of the guests in Shirdi hotels, and both Muslims and Hindus consider Baba to be a saint. Most local attractions are related to Baba in some shape or form. Although the Gurusthan temple where Baba first became well known at the age of 16 no longer exists, a small shrine with a large portrait and marble statue of Baba stands in Gurusthan's former location. Oil paintings of Baba hang on all the walls of the two-floor Dwarkamai Mosque, which also contains Baba's bathing stool. Even more Baba exhibits are displayed at Dixit Wada Museum and Adul Baba Cottage, the latter of which is owned by one of Baba's most devoted followers. Nearly a century after Baba's death, the locals continue to perform the procession Baba once took every other evening between Dawakamai and Chawri during his final decade of life. This elaborate procession now takes place each Thursday evening.other spellings: shirdihotels, shirdu otel, shiedi hotell, shirid hote, sirdi hotle, shirdo hotes
