Introduction to Ratnagiri, India
The district and port city of Ratnagiri is located on the Arabian Sea, in the southwest part of the Indian state of Maharashtra. Most Ratnagiri hotels are either luxury resorts or modest budget accommodations. The Arabian Sea surrounds the horseshoe-shaped Ratnadurg Fort at all three of the fort's sides. This massive fort is one-kilometre wide, more than one-kilometre long, and includes a lighthouse within its bastions. Ratnadurg Fort dates back to the time when the city was the most important port in the historic Muslim kingdom of Bijapur. The best known beaches in this coastal city are Pandre Samudra, whose name translates to White Sea in English, and Mandavi Beach, which is often called Black Sea because of its unique black sands. The impressive Gateway of Ratnagiri is also part of Mandavi Beach.
