Introduction to Manipal, India

Manipal, India is a university suburb situated five kilometres from the larger city of Udupi, in the southwest state called Karnataka. This region was transformed from a sparsely populated jungle into one of India's most impressive university campuses. Although most Manipal hotels are budget accommodations which cater to its huge student population, mid-range and luxury establishments are also easy to find. The hill on which both the university and its surrounding suburb are situated boasts impressive views of the Western Ghats mountain range to its east and the Arabian Sea to its west. Each day, approximately 100 buses travel between Manipal's Tiget Circle in the heart of the suburb and the larger city of Mangalore, the location of the nearest airport, 65kms away. The main attractions outside the university are the nearby Kaup and Malpe beaches, the former of which includes a lighthouse, and the End Point cliff above the Swarna River. The local nightlife is as lively as most visitors would expect from a university town.
