The Indian district and city of Kullu, or Kulu, was once described as the end of the liveable world because of its location at the foot of the Himalayas. Although a Chinese pilgrim monk named Xuanzang visited the region during the early 7th century, the region remained isolated until 1947. This was the year India became an independent country as well as the year Kullu first became accessible by automobile. Today, the nearest airport is only 10kms away in the city of Bhuntar and this beautiful hill station has become a popular tourist destination. Visitors may stay in any of the numerous Kullu hotels, rent cottage villas or enjoy a homestay with local families. Despite its increasing amount of visitors, however, the area remains an unspoilt region of natural beauty with several ancient temples to visit and adventurous activities to enjoy. Those wishing to climb any of the magnificent surrounding mountains are advised to hire a skilled local guide.
