Introduction to Kangra, India
Both the city and district of Kangra, India can be found in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, approximately 460kms from Delhi. Visitors to the city can stay in Kangra hotels, tourist homes, or bed and breakfasts. This city was formally known by the names of Nagarkot and Bhimagar, and Kangra Fort remains the city's most famous attraction. Alexander the Great mentioned this ancient fort, situated on the city's outskirts, in his war records. Kangra Fort is not only the biggest in the Himalayan Mountains, but it may be the oldest fort in all of India. Although much of the fort is now in ruins, much of its original splendour still remains, especially in its small and peaceful courtyard. Visitors can learn more about the fort at the adjoining Maharaja Sansar Chandra Museum, which is operated by Kangra's royal family and supplies audio guides. The much more recent Martyr's Memorial was constructed in 1972 to honour local soldiers who died in wars between 1947 and 1971.
