Introduction to Hassan, India
Hassan, India is both a district and a city in the southeast state of Karnataka, which enjoys a similar climate to Bangalore, which lies just 187kms away. The city was originally established in the 11th century and is now a popular base for visitors intending to explore the many surrounding historic temples. Most Hassan hotels are modest, affordable, and situated close to the bus stand. Hassan was once the largest city in the Hoysala Empire, which governed the region between the 11th and 13th centuries, but the most impressive monuments from this era stand in other nearby towns. Although Hoysaleswara Temple was never fully completed during its 86-year construction period in the 12th century, the details and artwork which were finished are impressive. Hoysaleswara Temple lies 27kms northwest in the community of Halebid, but Belur's Channekeshava Temple is the only Hoysala Empire temple still in use today. The world's highest monolithic statue is the Shravanabelagola pilgrimage centre's 17m tall Lord Bahubali monolith.
