The largest city in India's Assam region is Guwahati, a beautiful city surrounded by the lush hills of the Shillong Plateau, with the Brahmapurtra River flowing right through the middle of town. One of the best excursions in Guawhati is a river cruise, although even the brief ferry ride across the river is a great way to spend a couple of hours. There are numerous temples here, many of which are important pilgrimage sites. The views from Kamakhya Temple atop Neelachal Hill are particularly nice, though Uma Nanda Temple on its own river island is a unique experience as well. Visit Assam State Zoo and Botanical Gardens for an encapsulated look at Assam's wildlife and flora, while Assam State Museum has a decent group of exhibitions about the region. The best choice of hotels in Guwahati can be found in the downtown area, conveniently near most of the city's restaurants, bars and shopping complexes.
