Gulmarg is a hill station situated 52kms from Srinagar, the capital city of India's northernmost state, Jammu and Kashmir. This hill station was once frequented by kings and was a summer holiday getaway during the British occupation of India, but has only recently become a popular ski resort, having opened shortly after the 2003 ceasefire between Pakistan and India. CNN International recently ranked Gulmarg as the seventh-greatest ski destination in all of Asia because its Himalayan location boasts one of the continent's highest and longest ski slopes. The nearly 4,000m gondola which takes skiers up the mountains is one of the world's highest and transports an average of 600 people each hour. All visitors must pass through army security prior to entering the village, and all visitors must leave the resort before the sun sets because of a 1990 army curfew. The only exceptions to this rule are the guests who stay in Gulmarg hotels, whose rates fall dramatically after the peak December to June skiing season ends.
