Introduction to Gulbarga, India
Both the city of Gulbarga, India and the district of the same name where it is situated, in the southeast Indian state of Karnataka, have been settled since the 6th century. The city was officially established as the Bahmani Sultanate capital in 1347. Today, Hindus and Muslims co-exist in peace here, and most Gulbarga hotels have roughly three or four-star ratings. The most famous Gulbarga landmark is its old fort, established at the same time as the city itself and containing no fewer than 15 towers and 26 guns. One of the fort's many historic buildings is Jama Masjid, which a Moorish architect created to resemble the famous Cordoba, Spain's cathedral-mosque. A large dome covers the entire area of Jama Masjid mosque, which also features four smaller domes at each corner and 75 even smaller domes around its circumference. Muslims and Hindus alike make frequent pilgrimages to Sharana Basaveshwara Temple.
