The small pilgrimage town of Gokarna is one of the more popular backpacker travel destinations along Karantaka's coast. Other than a smattering of Gokarna hotels and restaurants, there isn't much of a tourist infrastructure in the town itself. The town is primarily filled with pilgrims and locals fully immersed in their spiritual quest. Of course, this creates a very interesting atmosphere that lures young travellers. Most foreign tourists, however, head to one of the four beaches just south of town such as Om Beach, Kudlee Beach and Half Moon Beach. Rustic bamboo bungalows and food huts are located at each of the beaches, which can be walked to from town in a few minutes. Mahabaleshvara Temple and Maha Ganapati Temple are the main religious sites in Gokarna, and are must-sees, especially during the Shiva Ratri Festival in early March when thousands of devotees flood into town and carry two massive chariots around the streets.
