Few other places in the state of Goa, the smallest state in India, contain a wider variety of accommodations than its capital of Panaji, situated in north Goa. This state is the wealthiest of India’s states, despite its small size, and was a Portuguese territory for approximately four and a half centuries before becoming part of India in 1961. The Portuguese influence remains very much evident in Panaji, especially the red roofs and Latin architecture of several homes and hotels in Goa. The former colonial capital is known as Old Goa and is actually located nine kilometres east of Panaji, but its dozens of historic buildings are well worth the short trip. Beach lovers will want to stay as close as they can to Miramar Beach, one of the most popular beaches, but Panaji is also home to India’s oldest public libraries and the country’s only legal casino, Casino Caravela, which is located aboard a yacht.
