Introduction to Bihar - Patna
The eastern Indian city of Patna, located in Bihar State, is one of the world's longest continually inhabited places, traditionally known as a centre for learning and the arts. Its walled old city, containing many ancient landmarks and monuments, was a famed trading centre for hundreds if not thousands of years. The modern city lies along the southern banks of the Ganga River, with a number of Patna hotels overlooking the waterway. The city is sacred for Sikhs as the birthplace of the religion's founder, with Jain, Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites nearby, including the Lord Buddha's birthplace, Bodhgaya. Large-scale international trade has ensured the prosperity of the town since the 17th century, with every European trading nation joining in the rush to export everything from silk to saltpetre. This sustained economic growth still continues via 'green' businesses including tourism to the town, with its extensive rail, air and road hubs connecting it with the outside world. Almost three million overseas tourists a year arrive here, with the majority heading for Bodhgaya. other spellings: pathna otel, patma hotell, partna hote, petna hotles, patnar hotle, pattna hotes
