Museums & Galleries

Museums & Galleries in Reykjavik
National Museum of Iceland: as you might expect, the capital is home to Iceland’s national museum, and with over 2,000 items it is well worth a visit. The modern museum has plenty of interactive exhibits, which are great for kids, and contains a range of artefacts, photographs and other curio which will keep you interested.
Some of the sections here include the ‘Making of a Nation’ area which attempts to help you answer the question ‘what makes a nation?’ There is also an exhibition looking at Icelandic marital traditions from pagan times to the modern day. The museum is also home to the National Gallery of Photography, and with over two million photographs in stock there is sure to be something to appeal to you.
Sudurgotu 41. Open: 11:00 to 17:00, daily (closed Mondays in winter, and national holidays).
Reykjavik Art Museum (Listasafn Reykjavikur): is actually made up of three different museums spread around the city; Asmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum, Harbour House and Kjarval Collection. Between them the three museums offer a great insight into Icelandic art and culture. The Sculpture Museum is dedicated to the work of Asmundur Sveinsson and is actually situated in his former house.
The extensive Harbour House, located by the harbour has a good mix of architectural and art exhibits, and regularly has exhibitions by modern Icelandic artists. Finally the Kjarval Collection displays international and Icelandic modern art, and has a shop and pleasant cafe.
Harbour House: Tryggvagotu 17, Asmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum: Sigtun, Kjarvalsstadethir: Flokagata. Open: 10:00 to 17:00, daily.
Saga Museum: recreates some of the most important events in Iceland’s history via a range of life-like models depicting some of the key people and scenes. There is a guided tour available on CD that takes visitors on a chronological journey through the history of the country; the CD is included in the entrance fee to the museum.
The museum doesn’t shy away from the grim side of Iceland’s history, for example you’ll find the scene of the country’s last catholic bishop being executed.
Perlan. Open: Summer: 10:00 to 18:00, daily; Winter: 12:00 to 17:00, weekdays only.
