January/February Festivals
Thorrin: this unquestionably Icelandic festival sees the people of Reykjavik celebrate the old feast, Thorrablot. A typical event sees plenty of singing and dancing, and lots of traditional Viking food all washed down with brennivin, an Icelandic spirit.
March Festivals
Beer Day: a festival that goes down well with a lot of people, a whole day dedicated to beer, to celebrate the end of beer prohibition in 1989. Restaurants and bars around Reykjavik join in the celebratory atmosphere.
June Festivals
National Day of Iceland: the people of Reykjavik celebrate Iceland’s independence with a number of celebratory events taking place around the city on 17 June.
International Viking Festival: every June, one of Reykjavik’s more unusual festivals takes place in Vidistadatun Park, celebrating the history of the Vikings in Iceland.
October Festivals
Reykjavik International Film Festival: Reykjavik’s international film festival enjoys a good reputation, and tends to have a few unusual categories, making it an interesting event. Held every October, the themes change each year.
Iceland Airwaves: taking place in October each year this popular music festival has gained a good reputation, drawing crowds from around the world. There are a number of venues hosting events with well over 100 different international and Icelandic pop and rock acts taking part.
