Land suitable for farming was snapped up and all but completely occupied by 930 then later in 1000, Christianity found its way into the country’s culture.
The political system devised by the original settlers fell apart in 1262, leading to internal struggles which eventually brought the country under Norwegian control, a state which it endured up until and throughout the Denmark-Norway union. Iceland subsequently went into decline, becoming a poverty-stricken country with little other than its agriculture as a source of income.
