Introduction to Vogar, Iceland
The small municipality of Vogar may be just 44kms from Reykjavik on a peninsula in southwest Iceland, but Vogar hotels are popular places to stay for their close proximity to both Iceland's national capital and famous Blue Lagoon, just 23kms away. Vogar once contained a greater population than both Grindavik and Keflavik, home of Iceland's largest airport, combined. A monument to the town's most famous resident and Iceland's strongest man, Jon Danielsson, stands in front of a local school. The local golf course is small, but challenging, and the outdoor pool is always open to both visitors and locals during Iceland's brief summer. However, walking remains the most popular form of exercise here. One of the easiest and most fascinating of the many local walking trails is Stapi Hill, and a headless ghost is said to haunt this scenic strolling path. The stone ruins of an ancient sheep pen known as Staðarborg are also nearby, but the most impressive local landmark of all is the 379m high Mount Keilir volcano.
