Introduction to Vik, Iceland
No village in the northern country of Iceland lies further south than Vik i Myrdal, commonly known by its nickname of Vik. This village 180kms southeast of Reykjavik may have no more than 300 permanent residents, but Vik hotels nonetheless welcome a good number of guests because the next significant community is at least 70kms away. The local beach was ranked among the 10 most beautiful in the world in 1991 and has become famous for its distinctive black basalt sand. The beach also happens to be one of Iceland's wettest locations, and the cliffs which lie to its west are popular bird-watching spots. The waves pounding the beach can be very rough as there is no other landmass on this stretch of the Atlantic between the beach and Antarctica. This may be one of the only villages on the Icelandic coast without its own harbour. Visitors may tour the village coast aboard paddle boats or even sail through the archway leading to Dyrholaey, mainland Iceland's southernmost point.other spellings: vek otel, vak hotell, wik hote, vilk hotles, vick hotle, vik hotes
