The vast majority of visitors to Iceland will arrive by air via the country's international airport. Located on a former NATO air base that was originally built by the US during WWII, the facility played a key role in air defences during the Cold War. Today, the vast airport provides the key link for international tourists and business visitors. The nearest Reykjavik Airport hotels are found in the town of Keflavik, after which the airport is named. This small community, about two miles from the airport, is the closest to the airport. Travellers headed to the Icelandic capital will need to make the 50km journey into the city of Reykjavik. A modern freeway opened in 2008, speeding up the journey for both cars and the regularly-scheduled buses that service the airport.
