Introduction to Reykholt, Iceland
Reykjavik may be Iceland's national capital, but much of the island country's history and culture is preserved in the much smaller community of Reykholt. This inland town in the middle of western Iceland is most famous as the residence of the famous politician and poet Snorri Sturluson, considered one of Iceland's most important historic figures. A Snorri Sturluson statue greets visitors to this village of just 60 people, which also contains a library dedicated to the medieval poet's works. The Snorrastofa research centre operates the local tourist information centre and a souvenir shop. Next to the Snorrastofa centre stands the local church, whose wonderful acoustics attract musicians from throughout the world, especially during the annual Reykholt Music Festival held each July. The village is home to the National Museum of Iceland, and the nearby Husafell woodlands are among the few wooded areas in the country. The largest of the Reykholt hotels provides sleeping bag spaces to its guests in addition to fully furnished rooms. other spellings: reykholt otel, rykholt hotell, reyklot hote, reykholthotels, raykholt hotle
