Introduction to Hveragerdi, Iceland
The town of Hveragerdi, Iceland considers itself as the world's hot springs capital, but this town situated 45kms east of Reykjavik also contains more greenhouses than anywhere else in the country. The town's many volcanic hot springs help heat the greenhouses as well as Hveragerdi hotels and homes. Earthquakes and volcanic and geyser eruptions are not uncommon here, but most local hot springs are situated in a designated geothermal park surrounded by a fence. The park is open on all summer days, and park visitors can soak their feet or even boil eggs in the hot springs, take natural clay foot baths or watch the locals bake black bread in a natural geothermic oven. The Poets Trail takes visitors through the three streets which formed Hveragerdi's artist quarters from 1940 to 1965, while more challenging hiking trails begin at the feet of the Hamar and Reykjafjall mountains. Most major amenities are situated in a recently opened shopping centre called Sunnumork.other spellings: heveragerdi otel, hveragerdy hotell, heragerdi hote, hveragardi hotles, hverajerdi
