Introduction to Hofn, Iceland
Hornafjarðarbaer, Hofn i Hornafirði, or simply Hofn are the most frequently used names for this fishing town situated 474kms from Reykjavik, Iceland, on the country's southeast coast. One of the largest Hofn hotels has its own restaurant and is situated in the middle of the town, but many smaller self-catering apartments and guesthouses are also widely available. No other ice cap in Europe contains a greater volume of water than the Vatnajokull glacier, the most popular tourist attraction here. A replica of the glacier and its surrounding area can be found at the local tourist office, and in recent years, the area has become a popular filming location. The glacier is the main subject of Hofn Glacier Museum, but the town also contains interesting nautical and folk museums. The liveliest local festival takes place on the first weekend of each July. This festival is dedicated to lobsters and is known as Humarhatið. A golf course is also situated here.
