Introduction to Fludir, Iceland
The Icelandic community of Fludir sits in the country's Suourland region, close to major attractions such as Gullfoss and Geysir. The latter is the geyser from which the word 'geyser' derived. Here, visitors can watch the geyser throw water 70m into the air, while close by are a number of others that, although less impressive, erupt more frequently. The area's other major sight, Gullfoss, is a spectacular double waterfall that runs along the River Hvita. Both sights are often included on tours of South Iceland. With around 340 residents, Fludir unsurprisingly has limited tourist facilities; however, there are a handful of hotels in Fludir to accommodate those passing through en route to nearby sights. A greater selection of amenities can be found in the region's largest town, Selfoss, 15kms away. Trips to Pingvellir National Park, where further natural beauty spots await, are also possible from here.
