The small town of Borgarnes, Iceland was first mentioned in the country's epic Egils saga, which was first published in the year 1240. Today, this town 60kms north of Reykjavik is the capital and most populated community in the large municipality of Borgarbyggo, the most densely populated in Iceland. There are at least four Borgarnes hotels in addition to five guesthouses, four campgrounds, about a dozen farmhouses, and two community centres where visitors can spend the night. This coastal town also contains three angling companies, 10 places to go swimming, and a dozen places to rent horses to ride throughout the scenic countryside of this western Iceland area known as Vesturland. Borgarnes also contains two golf courses, one of which is called Gianni, while the other is named after the town itself. The town's two main museums are named Safnahus Borgarfjardar and Buvelasafnid a Hvanneyri, while its two major art galleries are Galleri Hond and Ullarselid.
