Unlike in some corners of Eastern Europe, tap water is almost always safe to drink in Hungary and there are unlikely to be any repercussions when eating in restaurants – the tableware and food are usually clean – meaning stomach ailments are uncommon.

Travel insurance is advised for Hungary and often international patients are able to avoid fronting medical costs. Those without insurance will, however, pay a hefty price in the better private hospitals in Budapest and elsewhere.
