January Festivals
New Year’s Day: the first day of the month is a national holiday in Hungary and the night before it is a massive party across the country. Get to Budapest for the best of the action and expect a long, alcohol-fuelled night.
February Festivals
Mohacs Carnival: is a six-day festival usually held in February in the Croatian-dominated town of Mohacs. This is a strange blend of hairy facemasks, costumes, dancing and parades that takes over the town in what has to be the most unexpected festival in the country.
March/April Festivals
Easter: usually held in March but sometimes in April, Hungarian Easter is as traditional as it gets with mountains of chocolate in the shape of all manner of eggs and bunnies with the odd Easter egg hunt.
August Festivals
St Stephen’s Day: held on 20 August, this important national event is held in remembrance of the day the Hungarian state was first formed in the 10th century by St Stephen, the first king. Fireworks light up the Danube in Budapest in the evening and are not to be missed.
Christmas Day: like with many countries in central Europe, Christmas in Hungary truly begins on the evening of the 24th when people head home early for a special family meal followed by the day itself. The exchange of gifts and lots of good food make this the highlight of the holiday calendar.
