Part of the night scene includes wine-tasting venues like the House of Hungarian Wines at Castle Hill where visitors can wander around the vast wine cellar before choosing a couple of bottles to try out. Gundel 1894 Food and Wine Cellar is a similar kind of place in Pest that features a 30 per cent discount during the happy hours from 17:00-19:00. This is a good value place not to be confused with Gundel’s restaurant which is a tourist trap of mega proportions.
Pest’s nightlife is the most varied in the city. Here you’ll find the odd Irish bar such as Beckett’s on Bajcsy Zsilinszky, British pubs and Hungarian style country pubs. There are some great clubs to choose from too.
If you want a late-night taste of the city’s crumbling Communist part, quite literally, then head to one of the many ‘ruin pubs’ in districts 5, 6 and 7. These unusual bars are built in dilapidated buildings that have not survived the new capitalist era except as places to get a drink.
The A38 is an unusual venue over in Buda: a night club housed on an old Ukrainian ship now permanently docked on the banks of the Danube. Thanks to its excellent views and stellar nights out, it has become a massive favourite among locals and the international travellers that make it here.
