Holocaust Memorial Centre: another grim reminder of Hungary’s painful and not-to-distant past, the Holocaust Memorial Centre is the best of a number of similar type exhibitions in Budapest. An impressively arranged museum, the exhibits include numerous photos and artefacts from the Nazi occupation of Hungary and the Holocaust, including jackets once worn by prisoners.
39, Pava street. Open: 10:00 to 18:00, Tue to Sun.
House of Terror: this sadistic yet fascinating exhibition is housed within the former compound and headquarters of the Secret Police from the Communist era until 1991. Exhibits change frequently but just being in the building itself is fascinating enough with its tall, grey facade that used to strike fear into the Budapest locals.
60, Andrassy avenue. Open: 10:00 to 18:00, daily.
Museum of Fine Arts: an important collection of pieces from Europe and beyond, this expansive exhibition features sculpture, Egyptian antiquities and modern European art from the likes of Monet, Cezanne and Gauguin. It is one of Budapest’s most impressive galleries with enough to see over a day at least.
Dozsa Gyorgy avenue. Open: 10:00 to 17:30, Tue to Sun; 10:00 to 21:30, Thu.
National Museum: founded more than 200 years ago, the National Museum traces the history of the Hungarian people through to modern times. The exhibits include the Hungarian holy crown and the crown jewels.
14-16, Muzeum street. Open: 10:00 to 18:00, Tue to Sun.
