Introduction to Velence, Hungary
The lake of Velence is Hungary's third-biggest and is situated only 45kms from Budapest. This convenient location halfway between the national capital and the country's largest lake, Balaton, makes Lake Velence an especially popular holiday destination among Hungarians and Poles. However, Velence hotels have also welcomed growing numbers of guests from other countries around the world. Both the lake and the town of the same name were named after the Hungarian word for 'Venice', and the town's population nearly doubles during the high summer season. Other attractions within the town itself include a 1743 Calvinist church, an 1830 neoclassical Roman Catholic church and the historic Weincheim mansion, which has become the local library. Baths are currently being constructed at the location of a recently discovered thermal spring whose water temperature averages at 73°C. The average summer water temperature of the namesake lake, on the other hand, ranges between 26°C to 28°C, making the lake one of the warmest in Europe.
