Introduction to Tata, Hungary
Two mountain ranges called Vertes and Gerecse lie on either side of the valley where the town of Tata, Hungary is located, 70kms from Budapest. More than 93 per cent of the town's population is of Hungarian descent even though Tata is just minutes away from Hungary's border with Austria. Both the rail line and the main motorway between Vienna and Budapest pass through the city, so Tata hotels have become popular among passengers seeking a break between the two larger cities. The city has been settled since Roman times, and the hot springs which attracted visitors centuries ago have only now begun spouting water again. Artificial ruins of the town's ancient Roman baths were constructed in 1801, while replicas of ancient Roman and Greek statues stand in the town's old synagogue, which has been a museum since 1977. A museum has been located in the city's old castle since 1959. Far older and more authentic ruins, however, can be examined at the open-air geological museum and nature reserve close to Calvary Hill, whose numerous exhibits date as far back as the Triassic era.
