Introduction to Tapolca, Hungary
Near Hungary's popular Lake Balaton is the quiet resort town of Tapolca, known primarily for its extensive cave system. The Lake Cave is a unique feature as it lies directly underneath the centre of town. Small boats are available for rent to explore the vast cave, which boasts an underground lake that is three kilometres long. There's also an excellent town to explore above ground. Its medieval core centres around Main Square, the original marketplace. Lots of little cafes and shops are tucked into the old buildings in this area, giving visitors plenty to do. The Garden of Ruins is the main attraction in the old quarter, with its impressive church and medieval complex. Mill Pond, just above the Main Square, is another highlight and particularly romantic with its traditional mill wheel and perfectly manicured grounds. Due to the popularity of Lake Cave, there are plenty of hotels in Tapolca catering to tourists in every budget but the nicest accommodation is around Main Square and Mill Pond.
