The town of Szigetszentmiklos, Hungary is the second-most populated community on the island of Csepel. This island is over 50kms long and more than three kilometres wide, and is located just 10kms south of the heart of Budapest. Although Szigetszentmiklos was officially mentioned for the first time in 1264, it was not officially incorporated as a town until 1986. The town's name is a combination of the Hungarian words for 'island' and 'St Nicholas', and its most famous landmark, the 314m high Lakihegy antenna tower, can easily be seen from all Szigetszentmiklos hotels. Baptist, Calvinist, Greek Orthodox, and Roman Catholic churches can all be found in this town, which also contains a local history museum and a memorial house dedicated to famous Hungarian composer Jeno adam. The local community centre and library includes Hungary's largest zither (musical string instrument) collection, and the town's Danube River location makes it a popular place to fish and take part in all sorts of sports on the water.
