Introduction to Szentgotthard, Hungary
The borders of Austria, Slovenia, and Hungary meet near Hungary's westernmost community of Szentgotthard. Many of Hungary's Slovenian population live in this town, which is also frequently called by its Slovenian name of Monoster or its German name of St Gotthard. The town received its name from the abbey of the same name, which was established here in 1183, and its Baroque Roman Catholic church is ranked among Hungary's most beautiful, with an equally attractive garden set behind the building. Hungary's only Slovenian museum, the Pavel agoston Museum, can also be found here, and a wellness bath and spa recently opened near Lake Harsas. Although this lake seven kilometres outside Szentgotthard is artificial, its atmosphere feels much like a natural lake. Most Szentgotthard hotels are modestly sized with three-star ratings. The town's most important festivals are the Varoshaz Evenings which take place each Friday during the summer months, the Historical Days festival which occurs in early August, and the Christmas without Frontiers festival which takes place a week before this major holiday.
