Introduction to Pecs - City Centre
The motto of Hungary's fifth-most populated city, Pecs, is 'the Borderless City'. Ever since the ancient Romans founded the first city on the location of present day Pecs, many different ethnic groups have peacefully lived together in this multicultural city. Visitors should consult with the local tourist office to determine which of the many Pecs City Centre hotels are most suited to their needs. Monuments from all segments of this city's long history still stand in the city today, including remnants from the original ancient Roman city known as Sopianae. The early Christian necropolis from this era is the largest still standing in Europe. This city also has an 11th century cathedral and a Catholic church inside a building first constructed as a mosque during the 150-year Ottoman occupation of the city. The two main museums in Pecs are the Csontvary Museum, which exhibits the work of artist Tivadar Kosztka Csontvary, and the Zsolnay Museum, dedicated to the well-known ceramics factory of the same name.
