Introduction to Nagykanizsa, Hungary
Nagykanizsa is a Hungarian city of around 50,000 inhabitants which is located in the west of the country, close to the borders with Croatia and Slovenia. The town is a quiet backwater which makes for a pleasant stopover, but not somewhere to spend a whole holiday. In the past, Nagykaniza was a proud fortress town on the River Principalis which endured numerous Turkish assaults. The fortress, however, is no longer standing and the town is most famous today for its brewery, producing the Kanizsai Kinizsi brand, which is named after Pal Kinizsi, a folk hero of legendary strength who allegedly served drinks on a millstone to the woman he loved. The compact town centre consists of two squares connected by Fo Ut Road. The town was home to a large Jewish community, and there is a huge well-tended Jewish cemetery attesting to this. Some 3,000 Jews from the city were sent to Auschwitz during WWII, of which just 300 survived.
