Introduction to Lillafured, Hungary

Lillafured is a popular tourist resort in the Bukk Mountains of Hungary. The town itself only emerged in the 1890s, when a visiting count was taking a holiday at Lake Hamori. The area so inspired the count that he built a huge palace right on the edge of the lake that today is the posh Palace Hotel, one of the most popular and charismatic hotels in Lillafured. Surrounding the palace are the Hanging Gardens, a beautiful public park full of rare plants and walking paths. Hungary's highest waterfall cascades off the sheer rock cliffs behind the palace and into Lake Hamori. Also in the Hanging Gardens are three historic limestone caves that can be explored. Renting a paddle boat or row boat is the ideal way to enjoy Lake Hamori in the summer. There are also miles of hiking trails in the Bukk Mountains and excellent rock climbing on Hamor Rock and Miller's Rock. The Palace Hotel offers the best dining in Lillafured, with only a few other restaurants in the village to choose from.
