Introduction to Kalocsa, Hungary
The history of the Hungarian town of Kalosca, situated just 118kms south of Budapest along the Danube River's east side, dates back just as far as the eastern European country itself. Kalosca, however, is perhaps best known for its famous and elaborate embroidery, which began to develop during the late 19th century. Although much of the town was damaged by Ottoman invasions during the 16th century and an 1875 fire, many of its significant religious landmarks still stand, the most significant of which is the Archbishops Cathedral. This cathedral stands in the middle of Holy Trinity Square, and its two towers can easily be seen from several kilometres in the distance. The two-floor Archbishop's Palace is the other significant landmark here and can be found north of the cathedral. The palace was first constructed in the 1760s and its library contains more than 150,000 celebrated works of literature. Medieval maps and astronomical instruments are exhibited in the palace's ceremonial hall. Many Kalocsa hotels in this relaxing town contain their own wellness spas.
