Introduction to Debrecen, Hungary
Most travellers think of Budapest when they think of Hungary, but its second city of Debrecen also deserves a look. Located on the Great Hungarian Plain, the city offers visitors an interesting blend of historic neighbourhoods and a modern vibrant cultural scene led by its student and artist population. The new M35 motorway and the country's second-busiest airport ensure easy access to Debrecen from Budapest and other regional cities. Nearly everything in the city was destroyed during WWII, so most of the architecture is either post-modern or restored European style. There are some splendid hotels in Debrecen that managed to survive the war, such as the famous Aranybika Hotel located right in the heart of the city. The downtown core is also where most of the restaurants and bars can be found along with pleasant outdoor squares and the few remaining historic districts in places like Piac Street.
