Introduction to Budapest - Bekasmegyer
Part of Budapest's District III, Bekasmegyer, in a perfect position to explore the city, is divided into two areas by a commuter rail line Ofalu and a housing estate consisting mostly of high-rises. Together these two areas have a combined population of just over 40,000. Accessing the city centre from the district by rail is easy, with Bekasmegyer Station the final rail stop in Budapest on the HEV line before it continues into Pest. The community, once inhabited by German colonialists, derives its name from the German words for Frog's Megyer after the nearby Danube river marshes to the east, where the slimy creatures are prevalent. Bekasmegyer hotels, at just 12kms north of the Hungarian capital, are a cheaper alternative to their city centre counterparts. Bekasmegyer itself is devoid of any major tourist attractions, but sites like the Royal Palace, the Parliament Building and the Danube Bridges are just a short rail trip away. Traditional public baths, constructed around hot springs, are the city's perfect antidote to hot and dusty sightseeing. Visit our Budapest Travel Guide
