Guatemala's unique local culture is a dichotic blend of indigenous Mayan influence coupled with a rich colonial heritage from Spain's colonisation of the area in the 1500s. The country is run as a representative democracy, and is a true testament to the diversity of Mesoamerica.
The country's capital city, Guatemala City, is a bustling metropolis and one of the largest cities in Central America. Situated in the southernmost part of the country's centre, Guatemala City is nestled in a mountain valley known by locals as the Valle de la Ermita.
Despite Spanish being the official government language in the country, due to a large indigenous community there are several pockets in the country where Spanish is not the dominant language. Many local ethnic minorities have retained their local languages, including the Mayans. In fact, there are at least 21 known distinct Mayan languages that are spoken throughout Guatemala.
Guatemala is the artistic capital of Central America as well, and its language, ethnicity, and biodiversity only serve to enhance the local artistic community. Museums and galleries are plentiful throughout the country with focuses from ancient Mayan artifacts and archaeology to modern art displays that showcase the local flora and fauna.
