The CDC states that, although malaria cases have been documented in the country, visitors are only at risk in rural areas at altitudes that are lower than 1,500 metres. Antigua is a no-risk zone for malaria. Dengue fever, however, is endemic throughout the entire country.
The risk of both malaria and dengue fever increases during the monsoon season, and it is recommended that travellers purchase anti-malarial medication that can prevent infection from unwarranted mosquito bites.
It is advisable to only drink purified water, and visitors should avoid using water from the tap to brush teeth or gargle. Requesting bottled water in the room upon arrival at accommodation or hotels in Guatemala is advisable. When ordering at restaurants, only bottled water should be requested.
Visitors travelling around Guatemala during April and May should be sure to avoid dehydration by carrying lots of water, especially during treks up and down the local volcano;es. Temperatures during these months can reach the 40s (°C).
