There are tranquil bays, coastal cliffs and miles of perfect sandy beaches, making Zakynthos one of the most popular places to visit in Greece. The island is named after Zacynthos, son of legendary Arcadian chief Dardanos and is steeped in history.
The Venetian Fortress: is one of the main sites on the islands. It is situated in the place where written sources place the wall of the ancient acropolis (Psophidas). The construction of the walls and the Fortress defensive system was carried out by Venetian engineers and completed in 1646. As a result of excavations started in 1984, a significant amount of archaeological remains have been discovered dating from prehistoric to post-Byzantine times.
The Cultural Centre of Zakynthos and the Public Library: is housed in an impressive building next to the church of Saint Nikolaos. It is considered to be one of the best in Greece and has over 50,000 books, a small art gallery, photographic material and the historical archive of Zakynthos with codices and documents.
The church of Saint Nikolaos on the Mole: was built in 1561 and is the only Venetian building that survives on the Square. It has considerable historical value because the patron saint of the island Saint Dionysios served here.
