Greece Travel Guide - Introduction

The cultural heritage of the country spreads its influence across Europe and indeed the world to some extent. Today as a visitor’s destination, it offers good weather, fascinating sightseeing opportunities, great food and wine, a multitude of islands to explore and some of the continents finest beaches.
A lengthy and fascinating history is a significant influence on the country’s major attractions with sites such as the Acropolis and Ancient Agora in Athens drawing visitors in their thousands throughout the year. The relaxed and tourist-friendly environments of islands such as Kos, Zante, Corfu and Rhodes offer everything necessary for those visitors looking for lazy beach holidays with good restaurants and evening entertainment.
Of all the islands, Corfu is perhaps the most famous and well established in terms of tourist amenities. Resorts such as Corfu town, Agios Gordios, Kavos and Dassia are among the most popular and offer extensive hotel choices as well as no end of great Greek restaurants and busy pubs and nightclubs. Many of these resorts have thriving expat scenes, so don’t be surprised to see British, German or Irish pubs or restaurants there.
A favourable climate makes Greece a country that can be visited almost any time of the year and one which offers six to eight months of sun hot enough for bathing in. The months either side of the main summer season are perhaps the best if you enjoy sightseeing. Rainfall is relatively low throughout the year and there’s little need to pack your waterproofs.
