Crete Travel Guide - Introduction

Crete was also the centre of the Minoan civilisation, the oldest civilisation in Europe and as a result, there is plenty of cultural sightseeing to be done.
As you would expect, the island has some excellent museums, with a strong emphasis on archaeological museums displaying some of the most impressive finds from various archaeological digs over the years. There is also an interesting historical and folklore museum in Rethymno if you want a change from archaeology.
After a day on the beach or sightseeing, the island has a good nightlife to suit all tastes. There are plenty of bars and clubs for those who want to party into the early hours, but also there are local tavernas and restaurants dotted around the island. Meal times play an important role in Greek culture and there is some great food to be enjoyed, with some excellent seafood.
The mountainous island also offers some challenging hiking and walking. Samaria Gorge is one of the most popular areas to walk and gets very busy in the mornings.
