Crete Travel Guide
By air: Crete Heraklion Airport is the major airport and the main transport hub on the island. It is a relatively small airport and most of the flights landing here are from mainland Greece. During the peak summer season, there are some charter services from other European countries. Heraklion Airport is a one terminal airport with little in the way of extensive passenger facilities.
By ferry: there are ferries to Crete from a number of different ports on the mainland which are operated by either Minoan Lines or ANEK Lines. The crossing from Piraeus to Heraklion takes around nine hours on a regular ferry and six hours on a high-speed vessel; this route is provided by Minoan Lines. ANEK lines’ services to Crete from Piraeus terminate at Chania. The regular speed ferry is nine hours, and the high-speed ones just under five hours. ANEK Lines also run ferries between Piraeus and Rethymno.
