Bus: there are bus services covering most areas of Crete and all major destinations are served. While services are cheap, they are not always the most useful for visitors, with irregular schedules on some routes meaning that careful planning is sometimes required.
Taxi: there are taxis to be found in every major town and if you are in a group, it can work out as a relatively cheap way to get around. Taxis can be hired from taxi stands, hailed on the street or booked in advance by phone. There are two tariffs; one used between 05:00 and 00:00 and the more expensive one for the early hours of the morning.
Car: with the local transport being a little unreliable at times, hiring a car is the best way to get around the island and gives you the freedom to really explore some of the lesser known places off the beaten tourist track.
