Crete Travel Guide
Eating plays a significant role in Greek culture and meal times tend to be drawn out, lavish affairs. Cretan cuisine is effectively the same as Greek, with a focus on high quality fresh ingredients with tomatœes, olive oil, feta and cucumber used in many dishes. Being an island, Crete also boasts some excellent seafood.
Some of the local specialities include calamari, which are either grilled or deep fried; bakaliaro, fried cod with a garlic sauce; lamb kebabs and lamb fricassee, lamb, spinach, eggs, lemon and olive oil.
Prices vary enormously allowing all budgets to be catered for. At lunch time, it’s popular to enjoy a kebab or Greek salad at a beachside taverna, or cafe.
