Crete Travel Guide - Day Trips
Zakros: this village in eastern Crete is a lively town generally free of tourists. Cafes and restaurants are usually busy with locals enjoying some friendly banter. The drive there is impressive along a narrow winding road and there is a distinct feeling of being in the ‘real Crete’ here. There is also an interesting archaeological site, as well as a lovely stretch of quiet beach nearby.
Samaria Gorge: provides some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere on the island and is especially popular for hiking. At the narrowest point, the gorge measures just three metres wide. It dœes get very busy here in the high season and it’s a good tip to get here very early to avoid the biggest crowds. The whole gorge is 16km, taking you from an altitude of 1250m all the way down to the shores at Agia Roumeli.
Elafonisi: makes for a popular day trip, with some of the best beaches on the island. Located in the south west of the island, the stunning islet of Elafonisi is connected to Crete by a shallow reef of about 800 metres. When the sea is calm it is easily crossed. There are a few cantinas on the beach and some good areas for camping, although there are no people living here permanently.
