Crete Travel Guide - Activities
Spectator sports: Crete is not really the place for watching top quality sporting action, although the impromptu volleyball games on the beach can be entertaining. The main opportunity for spectator sports is to watch some football. The local team is Omilos Filathlon Irakleiou play their homes games in the stadium in Heraklion and there are regular matches during the season.
Water sports: as you might expect of the island, water sports are one of the most popular leisure activities and the full range is available. For many people, a relaxing swim or a gentle ride on a pedalo is more than enough fun in the hot sun, but if you are keen, you will find waterskiing, banana boat rides, sailing, speed boats, and windsurfing are all on offer. Away from the beaches, there are also two water theme parks, Limnoupolis and Star Beach, which are great fun for kids in particular.
Other sports: there are plenty of other activities available here for those that want it. Hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing are all popular activities on the island and can often be arranged through your hotel or tour operator. Horseback riding is another possibility both for experienced riders and beginners alike.
