Museums & Galleries in Corfu
Archaeological Museum: Corfu Town’s archaeological museum is relatively small but still provides tourists with the opportunity to learn more about the history of the island through its various historical and archaeological displays.
The highlight and most famous item here is the pediment dating back to 590 BC, from the Temple of Artemis, featuring an impressive Medusa figure. There are number of other statues and sculptures of interest, including a stone lion which has been dated to 575 BC.
Vraila. Open: 08:30 to 15:00, Tuesday to Sunday.
As you might expect there are some examples of Chinese porcelain from the great Chinese dynasties as well as some paintings. The Japanese collections include sculptures, ceramics and prints. To find such a museum tucked away in Corfu maybe something of a pleasant surprise for those interested in Asian art.
North end of the Spianada. Open: 08:30 to 15:00, Tuesday to Sunday.
Municipal Gallery of Corfu: this art gallery situated in Corfu Town was opened in 1978 and has a decent collection of predominantly 19th century art. A large focus of the gallery is on local painters such as Vicentios Boccaciampis, Haralambos Pachis, Angelos Giallinas, Pavlos Prossalendis and Skarvelis. Some of the most important works here include Skarvelis’ Sphinx, The Herd by Giallinas and The assassination of Capodistria by Haralambos Pachis.
Akadimias. Open: 08:30 to 15:00, Tuesday to Sunday.
Byzantine Museum of Corfu: is located in a 15th century church, Our Lady of Antivouniotissa and has a good collection of Byzantine icons. Some of the most important include the Icon of Theotocos Hodeghetria with the virgin and child, and the Icon of St Demetrius who is seen on horseback by the city of Thessalonike.
Kerkyra Open: 08:30 to 15:00, Tuesday to Sunday.
